Helsinki Cine Aasia 2018 presents films from 10 countries

 

This year Helsinki Cine Aasia festival presents films that tell stories about society, finding one’s own place in the world and animal encounters. Starting from 15th of March 20 East and South-East Asian films will premiere in Finland at the festival.

The festival opens with the Indonesian The Seen and Unseen (Sekala Niskala, 2017) by the director Kamila Andini. Depicting Balinese beliefs, symbolism and rituals the film has been awarded with the main price at TOKYO FILMeX 2017 and – just few days ago – the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for the Best Film at Berlinale 2018.

Helsinki Cine Aasia and KAVI in cooperation

 

Movie theatre Orion, run by the National Audiovisual Institute (KAVI), serves as one of the places where Helsinki Cine Aasia’s festival screenings will be held during 15.–18.3.2018. In addition to the festival films Helsinki Cine Aasia and KAVI will cooperate in March by screening two important Asian classics from the past.

Orion will screen South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s rewarded movie Memories of Murder (Salinui chueok, 2003) twice during March, on Monday the 15th and Thursday the 26th of March. Bong Joon-ho is known for his sinister themes and love for noir and his movie Memories of Murder is based on real events of 1986–91.

The 6th Helsinki Cine Aasia festival takes place from 15th to 18th March 2018!

The only festival of contemporary Asian cinema in Finland, Helsinki Cine Aasia, will take place again from 15th to 18th March 2018. The festival offers a fresh take on Asian film culture and the most interesting, ferocious and delicate films of the moment from East and Southeast Asia. In addition to film screenings, the festival programme also includes discussion.

Several of the films to be screened in March have been sourced fresh to the Helsinki Cine Aasia programme from the most important Asian film festivals or through direct contacts in Asia.
